Sarah Jane followed the Doctor around the Control Column as he flew the TARDIS through time and space. Then she noticed the corner of his coat was still smouldering and she patted it out. "So . . .let me get this straight. We're leaving Haley's Hope smack in the middle of a crisis to go all the way back to earth and get a something that is going to start their systems up again? Then we're going all the way back to jump right into the middle of the trouble, and literally stick a rock into it? Pardon me, Doctor, but doesn't that all sound a bit mad? I mean, can't you just sonic the thing? Or grab a bit from some place closer? Not like you to skip out just when things get hairy." What was that heat she felt at her knee? She took a look. "Och!" It seemed she had a bit of smoulder herself, and she gave her skort a good pat down. "Didn't think there would be enough air left in there to keep the fire going. And I've ruined my favorite pants." She frowned at him as he worked. "How soon can we get back?" The Fourth Doctor

"Stop, drop, and roll, Sarah!" he bellowed with a hint of worry buried in the authoritative command. Seeing as he didn't have any water supply in the TARDIS at present, it was the best idea he could muster to silent the small firey wisps dancing upon attire, and dangerous areas of the human body.
A large hand, his own, actually, swiped the hat off its usual resting place among his curls, and whacked it on the console a few times. His teeth bared fear, with a desire to put the heated chemical out as soon as inhumanly possible. Sarah had done her part by helping him calm the smouldering on his coat -- which, admittedly, he had not even been aware of until after.
Once all elements of combustion and possibility of them were far from his sight and presence, he took long strides around the console, preparing the TARDIS to take them someplace necessary. Or, rather, preparing the necessary to come to them.
And, oh, but of course, the delicacy of the human mind -- or, at least, Sarah's, despite her intelligence -- couldn't, or didn't, understand that. Which led to the inquiry he was expecting.
"So . . .let me get this straight. Not like you to skip out just when things get hairy."
"Yes! That's absolutely right. It's quite simple, really." he told her, his exotic blue eyes glancing up to look at her as he kept his stride. "My sonic screwdriver cannot be used on the ship -- it is made of wood, and, therefore, not compatible with sonic technology." he explained, "So, the only logical solution is to retrieve the mineral the ship is powered by and restart the systems entirely. The mineral is rare, and can only be found more abundantly where we're going." By this time, he had made a full circle around the console, and halted beside his companion with a toothy grin, thinking he had explained himself perfectly. "You see?"
He made a face upon her moaning, however, bending down to pick up his hat that had somehow ended up lying on the ground. "Oh, stop your complaining, Sarah. There are clothes in the wardrobe, you know." There was no need to get so upset over something so frivolous! Though, he couldn't say he would be any different if his scarf had not been saved.
"How soon can we get back?"
He dusted his hat off and placed it atop his head, which both seemed to have apparently gotten the lesser damage of the flames. "How soon is soon?" he asked, hiding a smile, with eyebrows raised, lips curled, though mostly out of jest and punny fun.

"Stop, drop - Oh!" She looked at him wide eyed and made a quick spin, her hands flying up into her hair. Nothing else seemed to be on fire, and when Sarah Jane full circle she stopped with her hands on her hips and a look of annoyance for him. Her annoyance didn't last long, however, because it was very amusing the way he batted out his hat right on the TARDIS controls. It seemed quite irreverent of both hat and TARDIS.
Soon, she found herself smiling at him again as he tossed a toothy grin, and gave her an explanation that was no explanation at all. All the while he circled the controls at good speed, flipping this and that. Sarah Jane took a grip of the rail that went around it all as soon as she saw the Time Column start to move. One never knew if the ride would be smooth or bumpy. It seemed rather arbitrary which it was on any given trip through Time.
"No . .I don't see! And you're lucky it wasn't your pants on fire, since you seem to have only the one pair." Clothes were a tender spot for her. Some of her clothes felt like friends. It was necessary to give him a jab in back for his teasing..
"And I'm serious. How soon can we get back?"
"How soon is soon?" The Doctor asked her cryptically in return, looking as playful as some overgrown Puck. His willingness to tease her right now took some of the tension out of her however. If he was actually deserting Halye's Hope, he'd be mad as a wasps' nest right now. The Doctor rarely found himself defeated, and he didn't take it well. His coy smile now assured her there was still a lot of hope that they could save the World Ship whose distress call they had heard. Sarah Jane walked past him, casually taking a handful of his scarf and giving it a little toss.
"Soon enough, I suppose." It was dawning on her that they could take their time finding this mineral of his, then go back almost the moment they'd left. It felt a bit like cheating, but it was all for a good cause. She headed to the wardrobe, calling back.
"Try not to bounce me off the walls. I'll be back soon enough."
In the wardrobe, she went for the boy's army outfit she'd gotten her hands on a month or so ago. The boots were plenty sturdy for wherever they were going to find this . .rock. After a quick change, she came dashing back into the control room. "Are we there yet?"
It still smelled a little smoky in there.
