Sarah Jane got home from Planet Three, groceries in tow, just in time to hear her phone ring. She left the door open and hastily set down her bags on an already covered table and dashed a few feet to the phone. She ran a hand through her hair to get it out of the way, and put it up to her ear.
"Hello?" She flinched a little, holding the phone out so she could glare at it. Loud static was all she was getting. She held it close again.
"Hello? Is there someone there?" Was that a voice she heard, back behind the static? Or was she imagining it.
"If you can hear me, I can't hear you. Some sort of interference on the line. You'll have to call back." With a frown she hung up, hoping it wasn't . . .something. Someone trying to reach her who could not.
The phone at Dorothy "Ace" McShane's house started to ring.

Ace had her head bent down, half asleep and half soldering a wire to a circuit board. Maybe it was because she was exhausted, maybe it was because her body hadn’t fully adjusted to earths clocking system she didn’t know.
Suddenly there was a bit of black smoke coming from the circuit board where she had left the soldering iron on it too long and it had started to burn a hole in it. “Maannn.” Ace pulled the board out from under her magnifying glass to take a look at the damage.
The phone startled Ace enough that it caused her to jump; reaching over Ace picked up the phone and put it to her ear, “Hello?” instinctively she jerked the phone away from her ear when she heard the static.
“Hello? Seriously, there’s a bad connection could you try to call back.” She listened to it for a second longer, slight goosebumps popping up on her arms cause it felt like the static was trying to crawl into her brain.

4:26 A.M.
Sarah Jane jolts up in her bed as the phone rings and she answers it quick. Someone could be in trouble. Someone might need to pass her critical information on her latest case. She lifted the phone and held it to her ear as she flopped back on the bed.
Then she sat up again. Slowly. It was the static again. Not so loud this time, and there was something behind it. A man's bass voice. It wasn't cutting out so much as fading in and out of the wide frequency static.
"Hello." She said a bit voicelessly. She was afraid she would miss it if a clear word came through. The voice sounded a million miles away, and she couldn't make out a single word. "I think you have the wrong number." she said decisively and hung up. Well, that was that. She was up now. Sarah Jane got dressed and went downstairs for some tea. She'd get some work in before she went to the office. Her day was busy, but she couldn't stop thinking about that strange almost=voice she had heard. Well, if someone wanted to talk to her, they'd have to be better at contacting her. Her life was complex enough without borrowing trouble.
At 4:26 A.M., Ace got the same call.

If it wasn’t unrestful blackness it was nightmares and now that damnable phone Ace untangled herself from her tee-shirt and comforter.
Without lifting her face from the pillow Ace started knocking around on the side of the bed trying to find the phone. Finally, when she found the hand set Ace lifted it up and placed it against the side of her head.
Lifting her face up enough off of the pillow to answer Ace looked up at the alarm clock as it glared down at her with its evil red eyes.
“It is 4:26 in the morning someone had better be dieing.” When her ears adjusted to almost awake to awake it hit her another static call.
Groaning Ace went to sit up holding the phone to her head “Look I don’t know what kind of game you’re playing at whoever you are but this isn’t funny.”
Sighing, Ace hung her head a little and sighed still holding the phone to her head she said in softer tone “Look, whoever you are, try back again when you get a better connection.”
Reaching over Ace hung up the phone, probably a little harder than she intended “Ace, you’ve got to get out of this apartment, you’re starting to talk to static phone calls.” Placing her hands on the side of the bed she gripped it before standing up and starting to raid her fridge.

Sometime in the afternoon. Sometime when no one is home at Ace McShane's house, and unseen by anyone markings were made on her windows in some sort of red grease. In three different sizes, and apparently created by a hand not entirely familiar with English characters, there are sloppily made question marks.
When Sarah Jane Smith arrives home, she finds her dog is missing. Much to her distress. K-9 may drive her mad sometimes, but he was incredibly useful. Well, not at opening doors without blowing them wide open. She takes a trip to UNIT to speak with the Brigadier General. The man had, a time or two, questioned her ownership of what could be a very devastating weapon. Sarah Jane grilled the man, but left again empty handed and convinced UNIT had not taken her dog.
When she got home, she found a bag of Jelly Babies just past her front door laying in the hallway. "Doctor?" She called out, hesitantly. Of course there was no answer. "Bugger." She mumbled. Something was a-foot.

Aces keys fell to the gravel as she stood stock still in the driveway of her apartment momentarily afraid to move.
Her life had been peaceful as of late, well, as peaceful as it could be. She didn't talk to her mother much anymore since she got back to earth so she had figured if she just kept her head down old friends would leave well enough alone. Closing her eyes for a moment Ace chewed on the side of her tongue and took a deep breathe through her nose and let it out through her mouth. There were better ways of getting in contact with her.
Reaching down she picked up her keys and headed into her apartment to find a razor to get the paint off her windows.

By night fall, she had the tracker in place. UNIT had been quite accommodating about lending her not only the equipment, but a technician as well. One Sargent Rickerson now sat in her living room trying not to look out of place. The tea and cookies helped, but it was going to be a long night. She'd stationed herself on the couch fully dressed and reading a fine book that was provocative enough to keep her awake. There was plenty of tea for her as well, black and strong. She was amused by how many lumps of sugar the Sargent had with his tea.
2:00 AM sharp the phone rang. Both she and the military man sat up quickly from their relaxed position, eyes meeting wide eyes. Rickerson hovered over his controls, flipped a switch and started the tracker up just as she lifted the phone from the cradle. A sound came, first distant, then getting louder.
The TARDIS, wheezing, groaning. It was such an unexpected sound that she got to her feet and spun around to see if it was actually coming. Rickerson made a circle with his fingers, reminding her to keep the 'conversation' going. It took her three full seconds to speak.
"Hello? There must be someone there. Look here you! I don't understand what you want from me." More groaning came from the earpiece. "Hello, I said! Who is there?" she asked indignantly then her tone dropped to become breathy with true angst. "Who is there? Is that you? What is wrong?"
The sound ended with that strange spinning sound it made as it finally escaped into the Time Vortex. "It's Sarah! Sarah!" Her own name echoed back to her in her own voice. Then the line went dead. She looked quickly to the soldier. "Did you have enough time?" "Got it! Here, look on the map here-" "Thanks Sargent."
The same exact call came at 2:04 A.M. to the McShane residence. Echos and all.

She really needed to paint her ceiling, Ace couldn't help but think as she tried to get comfortable for the night.
Finally accepting the fact that sleep was not in the cards for this night, Ace got up out of her bed and started towards her kitchen to make herself some tea. At least she could get some mundane research done, maybe that would force her to sleep….and maybe she had some chamomile tea.
Flipping the light on in the kitchen Ace started to cross the kitchen so she could turn on the kettle and get the water boiling. She got a couple of steps into the kitchen when the phone on her wall started to ring. Stopping, Ace stared up at the ceiling and sighed. “I’m going to stop paying the bill for that thing.”
Reaching over Ace grabbed the phone off the cradle and put it to the side of her head “Psychic Hotline, you have the wrong num….”
Ace stopped before she could finish her sentence when she heard a sound that she thought she’d ever hear again, or at least not for a long while.
“Doctor?” without even thinking, Ace shoved her feet into her doc martens that she had by the kitchen door as her voice echoed back at her over the phone “Where are you what’s, wrong?” Reaching over Ace grabbed her jacket acting purely on instinct.
Again all she got back was the echoing of her own voice on the phone “…professor?” her line went dead. Ace held the phone away from her face looking at the phone “…shit.”

In the morning at the McShane residence, there was shaky writing in the same red that had graced the windows. "2:26" was the entirety of the message. At her workplace, the newspaper had been delivered folded incorrectly. The Classifieds were there instead of the front page. In the middle of the page was a box with two long numbers, separated by a comma. -0.304841 and 51.550503. Following this strange set was something even odder. It was a question mark, three font sizes larger than the rest.
On the walkway up to the door that night, there were a pair of Doc Martians exactly Ace's foot size sitting precisely together, pointing back toward the street.
Sarah Jane was left many of the same clues, though she was not there to receive them. She was already camped out in her yellow VW bug up on a hill keeping watch on a dark little house in an overgrown field in Wembly. It was where that trace on the phone had led too. The place stayed dark and lonely as she watched it through her binoculars. She was going to stay put until she saw something. It wasn't her first stake out after all. By the time 2AM came around though, she was hoping never to do a stake out again. Even just thinking of that, she knocked on the wooden panel in front of her for good luck.
Her yellow Bug may not be the perfect car for what she was doing, but she only hoped it looked innocuous enough that no one would bother to wonder what some hippy might be doing up on a hill. Besides, since she was wearing all black, the little car might look abandoned. It would have to do.

Ace held up the newspaper with the coordinates that had been delivered to her work place, reading the numbers off again she looked form them to the map, then back to the numbers and then back to the map… “This can’t be right.” To her, the house looked uninhabited so…it wasn’t necessary breaking and entering right? “Man, I thought I’d grown out of this.” Checking her flash light really quick to make sure the batteries where good.
“Awesome, great, let’s do this…” great, now she was talking to herself as well. Letting out an exasperated breath Ace crouched down for a second checking to make sure she had her equipment.
Keeping to the tree line as much as she could she moved towards the house trying to find her way in “McShane this in going on the list of one of the dumber things you’ve done”

A small flash of light caught her attention. She knew full well how to get out of her car without letting it make a noise. Everything was kept very well oiled indeed. She slung her bag of tools from shoulder to hip and started to make her way down toward the little house. Someone had been trying to trick her, and she was going to fall right into the trap on purpose. It was the best way to find out what was going on.
Inside the house it was dark and sparsely furnished. Dusty. If any light was shown, it would reveal an umbrella in the kitchen pointing at a refrigerator that was oddly enough, buzzing with life. The light inside it was so bright, one could actually see it around the edges.

It’d been a while since she’d had to pick a lock so, Ace was a little rusty “Come on, come on.” sticking her tongue out a little she wiggled the lock picking kit and ever so slowly turned the lock on the door.
“Bingo.” Pulling the kit out of the door Ace took a finger and pushed the door open, to her the creaking sounded like a gun going off to here “Where’s my can of WD-40 when I need it.” Sighing she pulled her flash light out of the pocket on her pants and clicked it on.
“And let there be light.”

Sarah Jane crept up in the shadows, her ears so pricked she could have heard the squirrels snoring. With her back against the wall she heard a sound that actually could have been squirrels snoring, but she thought it might be a creaking door instead. Someone was definitely in there. It seemed most likely that it was whomever had set up this little song she'd been forced to dance to over the past few days. Her lip snarled up a moment in annoyance. From her pocket she pulled out some Mace.
The front door? No too bold for this one. She wanted to get a drop on whomever was there. Oh boy, did she ever have questions about how the maker of this trap had known so much about her and the Doctor. The pack of Jelly Babies she'd found at work had half broken her heart. However, it had been the sound of the TARDIS that hammered at her soul. One small part of her hoped very much that this was no plot at all, but the actual Doctor trying to call her to him to get him out of some sort of trouble. But she'd believe that when she saw it.
Sarah Jane went around the building and stopped at an open window. There were hand prints in the dust there that she could only just see by the tiny peanut lamp she kept on her key chain. She was about to climb in herself when she heard a woman's voice say "Let there be light."
And then there was light, she could just see the side spill of it coming out of a door. Sarah Jane went around to the other side of the house where she might be able to see into that room.

She couldn’t move, everything about the light had her transfixed. And it was all she could do to fight herself holding onto her flashlight.
“Come on Ace fight this you’ve been through worse.” she tried to raise her hand to shield her eyes but nothing happened, the only thing she managed to do was let the flashlight slip from her hand and fall to the floor.
The more she fought it the angrier she got if she got free she was going to come out swinging.

There were no windows that would show her where the light was coming from, so she wound up back at the open window she'd found moments ago. Halfway over the sill, and she heard something clatter from inside the house. Something was going on in there. It didn't make any sense to lure her here, and then try to frighten her away again, so she decided not to be frightened. Her toes touched down on the floor inside, and she slid the rest of the way in.
The first thing she saw was a typewriter. As she walked toward it, it began to type lightning quick. She got close enough to see what it was and a shiver ran through her.
Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah
She was reaching, almost automatically for the paper to pull it out when she smelled something. Something metal and coursing with energy. Not electricity, no, this was some sort of space stuff. Sarah Jane snatched her hand away and stepped back. You were lured here, don't take it hook line and sinker, Smith. With effort she turned her back on it. That left her facing the doorway where the light was coming out, both faint and sharp. In a few steps, she had her back against the wall beside the door. Even as she started to peek around the corner, that light tugged at her, and she turned quickly to put her back against the wall again. From her bag, she dug out a pair of very dark sunglasses.
Sarah Jane put on the darkened lenses, and peeked around again. The strange draw of it was as muted as the light had become. The small hairs on the back of her neck rose as she saw someone standing there, a young woman who was barely moving. From what she could see of her face, it was drawn in great effort, and one of her hands was fighting it's way into a fist. A hand that must have been holding the torch Sarah Jane could see on the floor still beaming. That moment, the cold box with it's gleaming light started to open of it's own accord. Without another thought she ran straight in, closing her eyes tightly. Blindly she slammed the door, having half run into it. She dare not open her eyes again. The door did not fight her, and stayed closed. She left it, turned, and started groping her way into the room, her hands held out blindly.
"Where are you? I'll help you!" No doubt the young woman had been lured here as well. With that last piece of the clue, she realized who must be here with her. Ace. A companion of the Doctor's who now lived on Earth again as she did. Who else had a jacket like that, appearing as some sort of denim armor? Not to mention her inappropriate pants. Well, she supposed all the kids were wearing them these days but they seemed so insubstantial, like wearing paint on one's legs.
"Ace? Is that you? Come on kid, make a sound!"
Sarah Jane supposed she was groping rather ineffectually, but she didn't quite know which way she was facing now.
"Ace, just make a sound." she demanded, "we have to get out of here."
